3 Types of Home Water Treatment Systems and When To Use Them

There is growing awareness of the dangers posed by contaminated drinking water. If you have any concerns about the water in your home, one of these three filtration technologies may help.

  1. Water Softeners

Hard water may sound like an oxymoron, but it does not refer to the texture of your water supply. Instead, it indicates that there are high levels of certain minerals in the water. These are often detected because they leave a residue on surfaces. White lines on your shower door, streaks on glasses after they go through the dishwasher or residue around the filter of your coffee pot, are all signs of hard water.

Water softeners Tampa are a common solution to high mineral content. They use salt to draw minerals like calcium and magnesium from the water supply. This reduces wear and tear on appliances and makes cleaning much easier.

  1. Activated Carbon

Activated carbon filters are a very common way to remove other contaminants from water. Because of the unique nature of carbon, it attracts contaminants including chlorine, PFOs, pesticides and microplastics. Some filtration systems can also remove metals like lead, zinc and mercury. These filters range from whole house systems to simple point-of-use units, depending on your needs.

People use carbon filters for varying reasons. Simple water pitchers with a filtering device are a great way to remove the chemical taste from tap water for drinking purposes. However, if you have concerns about water contaminants, you’ll want to find a filter designed to address those specific chemicals.

  1. Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis filters force water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove contaminants. They are incredibly effective at creating clean water, but they can be expensive to install and operate. For those reasons, many homeowners choose a point-of-use filter for cooking and drinking purposes instead of a whole-house system.

Water softeners, activated carbon filters and reverse osmosis can ll remove contaminants from the water supply. Depending on what you are trying to remove from your water, you may need to employ more than one method.
