Radio broadcasts, cell phones, computer networks and military transmissions are just a few things that use radio waves. Many of society’s largest milestones were because of radio and its applications. Radio is a complex science, but understanding its fundamentals can help a person get a message across as efficiently as possible.

How Radio Waves Are Created

When particles are charged and begin to accelerate, radio waves and radio antennas are formed. Blackbody radiation, lightning, stars and other natural sources can generate radio waves. Transmitters are now used to artificially create radio waves and send them to antennas on a device.

How Radio Waves Work

With modern radio, digitized information is carried across a region through sound waves. Phones, radar, satellites and other electronics are designed to process the waves as they come. Most people are familiar with commercial radio signals, which are transmitted through AM radio waves. After being converted into vibrations, the signals are amplified so a person can hear them loud and clear. Radio waves vary in length but they are longer than all other electromagnetic waves, which gives them significant reach.

How Radio Waves Are Managed

Radio frequency (RF) is easy to control with the right equipment. RF couplers and splitters are used to bring signals to different circuits. This process makes it easier to measure, monitor and disseminate a signal. There are many different forms of radio equipment that have specific applications.

Radio waves will continue to be an important aspect of contemporary living, especially with the rise of mobile phones and WiFi. Understanding radio waves not only gives insight into how society has gotten to where it is, but where society may be going. Radio technology is continuing to evolve and its applications are continuing to expand. Only time will tell what the next major feat will be.
